Raves and Faves

These are a few of my favorite things...
Tue Jul 7

Hmmmmm.....

Here’s a thought to ponder on the day Michael Jackson is laid to rest…

Alec Baldwin

Ellen Degeneres

Jamie Lee Curtis

Kevin Bacon

Madonna

Michael Jackson

Michelle Pfeiffer

Sharon Stone

Tim Robbins

All a bit controversial at some point in their lives…  all a bit of a rebel at some point in their lives… all very talented… all born in 1958.

Did I mention I was born in 1958?  Hmmmmm…

Raveless and Faveless

It is not that there has not been a rave or a fave in my life for the past few days… OK… past few weeks… it’s just that life is sometimes a blur.  And lately it’s been a blur.  Hang with me.  I’ll be back.  Maybe this weekend when I go canoeing down the Niobrara River you’ll hear about some of my raves and faves!

When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”

“What’s for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”

“I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully.

Yesterday I went for a Old Market walk with my friend, Kelly.  We started at 15th & Jackson… down to Heartland Park… over the underpass to Ricks… down the riverwalk to the PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE pictured above!  Across the bridge (3/4 mile)… touched Iowa… turned around and back… over on the MLK walkway… east to 13th, south to Jackson… back to Skinner Macaroni building.
This pedestrian bridge is awesome.  It is always busy… bikers, walkers, strollers, couples, kids, families… just a great place to be.  Who knows, maybe someday I’ll even spend some time on the Iowa side!
(Thanks to Kels for pics!)

Now you may wonder why I’m reposting this on “Raves and Faves”… it certainly is not a happy event.  I’m posting it because it is an example of one of the greatest things about the human spirit… the ability to be reselient when things go awry.  My brother and his wife had an AMAZING garden… it was in the throes of blooming and growing… and then the hail rolled in.  For the most part, everything was destroyed.

Here comes the resilience… when I talked to my brother this morning, he said, “Well, I guess this weekend we’ll be starting over.  We’ll just have to replant the entire thing.”  Wow… what no profanity?  no shaking a fist?  no cursing human nature?  It may be that part had already passed but at any rate… they are my garden heroes.

We will be, for the most part,

Starting Over.

Yes… eat your heart out… Rachel signed that cookbook for me (well… really for Kelsey for me… well… really for Kristy for Kelsey for me… but I digress)!
So.  In honor of my good friend, Rachel… and inspired by kristycooks.tumblr.com… I’ve been trying a few of these recipes lately. Last night I made bbq chicken, salsa salad, and pumpkin-chipotle polenta.  The day before we tried tomato toast with our homemade sugo sauce and angel hair pasta.  Tonight I fixed a side of BLTP (bacon, leet, and tomato potatoes) with the grilled steaks.  All delish!
If you are going to cook with Rachel and shop in suburbia, it is helpful to have your Blackberry so you can google things like “polenta” and “chipotle in adobo sauce” and “chutney”.  It helps you narrow in on the aisle in which you should be looking!
If you are going to eat with Rachel be sure to have something handy to abate the fire in your mouth.  I do love spicy but this girl takes it to a new level!
And lastly, it is nice to have a dishwasher.  Rachel likes to use all kinds of pot and pans while creating.  My dw is named Marc :)

A lovely bistro know for its outdoor patio, delicious wines, and mac n cheese with embellishments.  We’re all about embellishments!  A jewel in the midst of midtown’s Dundee.

Just remember, the same as a spectacular Vogue magazine, remember that no matter how close you follow the jumps: Continued on page whatever. No matter how careful you are, there’s going to be the sense you missed something, the collapsed feeling under your skin that you didn’t experience it all. There’s that fallen heart feeling that you rushed right through the moments where you should’ve been paying attention.
